“Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”
Matthew 5:48 NKJV
We now begin the study on the practical ways by which the qualities unto perfection can be harnessed.
“But also for this very reason, giving all diligence ,add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge…”
II Peter 1:5 NKJV
Scripture asserts us to give all diligence unto the effort of attaining and/or increasing the qualities unto perfection.
Diligence is translated from the Greek word spoude which implies speed, eagerness and earnestness in accomplishing a goal.
This is very important. Scripture instructs that this is the way to strive for attaining and improving these qualities unto perfection.
It has to be done with speed/ haste. Scripture does not allow sluggishness for this cause. You don’t know the full number of your days on earth as a mortal believer and hence it is paramount that you achieve as much as you can, as early as possible. Remember that perfection consists of the combination of maturity and completion unto the measure of the stature of Christ. You have to be matured as early as possible.
Giving diligence also speaks of seriousness (eagerness). You cannot afford to be lazy (slothful) or playful concerning this goal. In Scripture, there is no where you will find a good word concerning laziness. The Bible is way more severe concerning laziness (slothfulness) than even drunkenness. Yet many in the Body of Christ tolerate more lazy people than they do drunkards.
Lastly giving diligence speaks of eagerness. One must strive to attain these qualities with great excitement and interest. Therefore, you are not expected to do all these because you have to but because you want to and are so excited to see the outcome.
The obedience God requires concerning this is that of concordance. An example is this: You are required to give. But God loves not just any giver but a Cheerful Giver (2 Cor 9:7). This kind of Giver is eager to give with excitement in fulfilling this obligation of love and great interest to see what awaits in store for him/her as a blessing.
Diligence is a very important tool in the building process of attaining perfection. With faith being the foundation; these qualities unto perfection are:
1. Virtue (excellence) 2.Knowledge 3.Self – Control 4. Perseverance (endurance) 5. Godliness 6. Brotherly kindness/love (philadelphia) 7. Love (agape)
We will tackle all these qualities one by one in the sessions to come.
Never forget to give all diligence to attain, practice and improve these and you will not stumble on your path to perfection. Grace is sufficient for you!!
