Today we want to look at why Grace came about. Is it just so that people can turn it into a catch and trendy response to a question? Is it because God just decided that Grace will look good on believers?
From the introduction of this series, it was determined that Grace is the unmerited totality of God’s work through Jesus Christ in our lives. Simply put, everything that God has done through Jesus, whether collectively for the Body of Christ or just for you falls under Grace.
We have to understand that God has a particular way by which He deals with mankind. For every period in history, God dealt with mankind in a specific way. The duration of these periods are called DISPENSATIONS and these dispensations are normally named after the way God deals with man.
According to theologians, there have been five dispensations: Innocence, Conscience, Human Government, Promise and Law. We’re in the sixth on now, the Dispensation of Grace.
Hebrews 8:7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
Exodus 19:5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
Let’s take our time to analyse these verses of scripture. It’s interesting to note that God uses tools called COVENANTS to initiate these dispensations. Every dispensation has one; each with a unique set of circumstances.
Now inasmuch as each covenant had its own set of clauses, they all followed a particular pattern, “God does His part and man does his part” as we can clearly see from Exodus 19:5. However, man always falls short and fails to hold up his end of the bargain. We can see this from Hebrews 8:7, the fault in this type of covenant is mankind’s inability to do his part.
So God, being the wise and benevolent Father that He is, decides that if He’s going to establish anything with us, He’s going to have to do everything Himself. Now, instead of a covenant that requires man to fulfil his part of the bargain, God does it for man.
Hebrews 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
Hebrews 8:11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
Hebrews 8:12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
It is interesting to note how God is like “I will… I will… I will…” Man does not have to do anything because God has taken care of man’s part!! Thank You Lord!! In this era of Grace, God has taken care of our part.
