Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in Heaven is perfect.
Matthew 5:8 NKJV
“But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.”
II Peter 1:5-7 NKJV
In our previous sessions, we have gone through the foundation – faith and the first building block – virtue (excellence). Upon excellence, another building block of quality unto perfection is KNOWLEDGE. One of my favorites.
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge…
II Peter 1:5 NKJV
Knowledge is a very important quality that you as a believer should possess in your path unto perfection. It is your next priority after excellence.
The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
Proverbs 18:15 NKJV
This Knowledge is not just any knowledge; this is about the knowledge of God’s Word and God’s Will.
Many in the body of Christ are just satisfied with just knowing about their salvation. They believe that the rest are not nearly as beneficial but this is totally wrong.
The Book of Ephesians asserts what attaining perfection thus maturity and completeness looks like:
Till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
Ephesians 4:13 NKJV
A perfect man is one who has leveled up to the measure of the stature of the FULLNESS of Christ.
And who really is Christ?
Christ is the WORD made flesh(John 1:14).
Therefore, in essence, to attain to the fullness of Christ is to attain to the measure of the stature of the fullness of the Word.
Remember, using the illustration of the circle; we learnt earlier in the beginning of our series that being perfect doesn’t mean you are to be the exceedingly large round complete circle that Jesus Christ is.
You have to be a round perfect circle in your own allotment of life, place and purpose. Being a small circle is enough but it has to be round and perfect.
To attain to the fullness of the Word, you definitely need knowledge and an ever- increasing measure of it.
Knowledge pushes you into perfection in Christ. The Word of God strongly makes that clear. Let us take a look at the Book of Hebrews:
Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God…
Hebrews 6:1 NKJV
The Word here says that we should go beyond the elementary principles of Christ (which were later listed – 6 in all) and move on to PERFECTION.
Hence Perfection in this sense is directly proportional to the increasing measure and quality of Knowledge.
The More of God’s Word and Will you know, both in measure and quality, the more you become like Christ.
Just like Jesus Christ being the WORD made flesh; you can end up becoming the word made flesh.
Knowledge is very important. The ear of the wise seeks knowledge (Prov.18:15) and between you and I, no one wants to be foolish in Christ.
In our upcoming sessions, we will delve a little deeper into the benefits of growing in Knowledge. Particularly, of God’s Word and God’s will.
Attain perfection. Seek Knowledge. Grace has been made available to you.
