“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Philippians 3:20, NKJV
One of the gracious truths wrapped up for us believers is the revelation of our glorious heritage in Christ. The knowledge of your roots is one of the greatest revelations a person can have about his/herself because it serves as a foundation for your purpose in life.
From our opening scripture, our citizenship is in Heaven. This can only mean one thing. We are citizens of the wonderful place called Heaven though we live elsewhere. If this is so, then making it to Heaven is not our ultimate goal. You don’t struggle so hard to make it to a place you are already a part of.
It is much easier for a person to attain visa to return to his/her own country than for a person to travel outside. When you misbehave in another country, one of the best methods of handling the situation is to deport you back home.
Here is the case where you are in another place which is not your home. As a Christian, you were born from above. Your parentage is not of this world. You are of the new foreign species dwelling in another place. When you go the embassy, what will be much easier to do? Going to your home country OR maintaining your permit to stay in a foreign land?
It is very important that you know where you come from. It is a glorious heritage that you should be proud of. Jesus Christ was proud of His home country. He mentioned his roots time and time again with His head held up high when he was in this world:
“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”
John 6:38 NASB
Not only did He testify of his roots, others did for Him too. One of the was John the Baptist when He was asked questions concerning the Christ. This is what John says about the Christ.
“He who comes from above is above all, he who is of the earth is from the earth and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.”
John 3:31 NASB
Later, Jesus Christ then comes in to confirm these words of John the Baptist:
And He was saying to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world.”
John 8:23 NASB
Also, He clearly points out their difference in roots. His origin being way better than theirs. This was why He was inherently better. Their difference in persona purpose and achievements was as a result of their different roots. This is why the understanding of your roots is very important. When the foundation is uncertain, the purpose is also uncertain.
Citizenship by the new birth
I thank God for His Word. For all those in Christ who cannot seem to find their heritage or roots, He has provided the answers in His Word. Yes, we were once in Adam but our lineage was corrupted by death and darkness through sin. Then Jesus Christ came from Heaven on an assignment from the Father to root our genealogy back to the Father. But this time we bypassed Adam and all the issues that comes with him and through Christ, got connected to our Source.
We have been transformed into a new class of species, born again into a new race with new roots (2 Corinthians 5:17). Our citizenship was then changed due to the legal rights we possess in relation to our new birth. We are citizens of Heaven by our new birth. This kind of citizenship cannot be taken away from us legally unless the aspect of our new birth is compromised. So far as you are born-again, you are a citizen of Heaven.
The Word of God says in Ephesians 2:6:
“And hath raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”
Our roots are from heavenly places just as our Lord Jesus Christ is. This is because it is in Him and through Him that we are citizens of Heaven. Jesus stated in John 3:31 that He was from above and not of this world. This is also the same for all of us in Him(John 17:16) and because we are from above, we expected to set our minds and hearts on things above(Colossians 3:1-2) which simply means that we should act as such. You are expected to come to the realization of who you are as a Citizen of Heaven and act as such.
Good understanding of your citizenship moves you from referring to yourself as a Baptist, a Pentecostal, a Charismatic etc. to who you really are – a citizen of the most powerful and awesome place ever; Heaven.
This Citizenship cannot be easily retracted because you have legally attained this right by avenue of your new birth. Therefore, you have to stop worrying about where you will go. As a believer, you are already in Heaven (Hebrews 12:22-23) because you are already legal citizen.
Let me put it this way. Are you born-again in Christ Jesus? Then you are a citizen of Heaven. You do not work to make it there, you are already there.
The only way you can lose your Heavenly citizenship legally is when you whole heartedly denounce with your mouth your faith in the Lord Jesus and hence no longer become a Christian. This is because you are a citizen in Him and through Him. Aside that, there are better things to do than being anxious of whether you will go to Heaven or not.
Instead, focus on this. Why are you here? Jesus came down from His home in Heaven, to this world that He doesn’t belong to, to do the Will of His and Our Father who sent Him. Citizen of Heaven, why are you here? What is your role to play? What is His will for you to perform here in this foreign world? This is your purpose. Set your goals to finding and fulfilling these answers.
As a fellow citizen of Heaven, let me officially welcome you to this glorious heritage. As you sojourn on this strange world, never forget where you come from. Fulfil your mission with your head held up high o citizen of Heaven. Your nation has got your back.
