Listening to God 102: Voice Recognition

Have you ever walked down the street, passed by some stores and then heard a familiar voice? You took steps back and focused on the direction of the sound with more attentiveness.

Then after a short while of focus, you saw the source of the sound and realized that the person is someone you know.
You identified the person and picked him/her out from the crowd because you recognized the person’s voice.

Voice Recognition is a wonderful thing. Not only can you identify someone by the face and body outline (maybe cologne) but without sight, you can still pick a person out because of his/her voice. Sometimes even when they try to mask it, they wouldn’t be able to fool you if you know them pretty well.

Close your eyes and identify the voices each of everyone around you. You can try this exercise at home, school or your work place.

Then comes an important question. Can you pick out God’s voice from the noise? Can you be able to recognize His voice even when He speaks faintly?

It is a good and advisable thing to learn to familiarize yourself with His voice so well that the enemy won’t be able to fool you if he mimics God’s voice to lead you astray.

How can you then familiarize yourself with His voice?

I will give you two tips for the next two lessons and integrate the others in the lessons to come. Though small, these tips are very precious and can be really helpful.
The tip for today:

Study and Meditate on His Word.

Let His Word continually be on your lips and in your mind and heart.
Jesus advised that one must learn to live on God’s word in the same way as one would do with food (Matt 4:4).
In a similar way, the people of Israel were advised to live on His Word by doing these:

And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.

You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes
.

You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

Deuteronomy‬ ‭6:6-9

Learn to familiarize Yourself with His voice through His Word. As you meditate, He lights upon your mind and heart more revelation. This is one channel through which He speaks. One of the most frequent kind, I would say.
Get used to this, and you’ll be able to recognize His voice among the noise.
